She nervously fidgets the hem of her white doctor’s coat over her blue scrubs as she waits outside the Lilycove Elementary School. For the first time, she curses herself for signing up for volunteer work and worse – dragging MATIAS SILPH into it. What the fuck was she thinking?

Well, she wasn’t. When they approached her about doing a little ‘career day’ for first grade class, she didn’t think twice about saying yes. She had always loved mentoring and teaching children. Despite being quite busy, The League insisted they both go together. What’s better propaganda than the iconic League power couple teaching excited children? A Head Professor and an Elite 4 member? Dream team.

his greeting is void of any hostility or venom. it's actually rather pleasant, all things considered. almost as though nothing had happened between them. almost.[break][break]

but there's a void between them now that he simply cannot overcome. it feels ever-present, dominating, and too deep to overcome. not that he's tried yet, of course, but still.[break][break]

She couldn’t imagine what it would feel like to see him again. When she hears her name, it’s something akin to listening to a foreign language. It doesn’t sound right. Something’s missing. When she turns to face him, he’s met with an equally as vacant expression, “Hi,” she greets in return, hands slipping into the pockets of her white coat.

Eva’s hard to read, but anyone that knows her knows a smile is easy to come by. She practically lives in one. Instead, she’s just a shell of who he’s grown used to over the past year, “I’m fine,” A lie, “You?”

Eva doesn’t spend much time focused on him. The pained smile is hard to look at so she turns towards the building, focusing on that instead. The bitterness of her departure still stings her tongue.

Her shoulders shrug slightly in response, “Yeah, I bet they are,” she half smirks out of amusement, “They probably can’t wait to meet a member of the Elite Four,” she’s just here for the nerds in the corner. Science isn’t as sexy as pokemon battles.

“C’mon,” her head motions towards the front door. After a few steps she pauses, turning back slightly to face him, “HNN is supposed to be here so . . . don’t forget to smile for the cameras.”

with a sigh, he nods, then follows after her into the building before eventually finding himself in a wide gym hall. students, along with some parents, sit in the stands, eagerly awaiting the league power couple.[break][break]

stepping closer to eva, he nudges her towards the stage, slightly amused at the scene in front of them.[break][break]

Yep. They’re there. A few reporters stand clustered in a corner near the little stage. As soon as they enter the room, the flash of lenses falls of them, catching Eva off guard. She wasn’t lucky enough to be groomed by luka chêne.

Instead of a smile, her face twists into stunned confusion and a bright flash makes her flinch backwards, running right into Matias, “Sorry!” she instinctively gasps, stepping back forward. That was probably an extremely attractive series of photos.

The fluster fades enough for her to scan the crowd this isn’t what she was expecting. A whole gym full of them? She was going to let them play with her stethoscope. Matias’s nudge is met with resistance, “Me?” she casts a quick glance back, then inches forward. It would probably be best to go first, anyway. No one wants to have to follow an Elite Four’s performance.

where he is stoic, professional, and trained, she flinches and flusters, and it's only then that matias realizes the difference in pr training they've had.[break][break]

so, naturally, he reaches out for her arm when she stumbles back into him.[break][break]

"it's okay."[break][break]

but they had talked about this briefly, before their fight. the expectations were that they'd be presenting to a small classroom of children, not an entire hall. he must've forgotten to share the update that was sent to him a few days ago.[break][break]

so, as she inches forward, he steps up as well, stopping briefly by her side to whisper:[break][break]

"i'll present. just follow my lead, okay?"[break][break]

offering her a genuine, reassuring smile he takes her hand in his, and walks up on stage together, presenting the image of a perfectly happy couple.[break][break]

he clears his throat before he approaches the microphone. once there, he leans forward slightly, speaking into it.[break][break]

"hello! so, who wants to fight a member of the elite four?"

In just the few inches, she manages to steel her nerves as she racks her brain for a plan. The unexpected stage takes a little improvisation. Luckily, she doesn’t have to do it alone.

Matias comes to her rescue, offering a genuine smile. When she glances up at him, the corners of her lips twitch, almost reciprocating. She doesn’t have much a of a choice, he seemed to have a plan of some sort which didn’t surprise her, “Okay,” she whispers back, letting him take her hand and lead her up onto the stage. The warmth of his palm on hers is the most comfort she’s felt since she left.

Luckily, there’s a distraction to keep her head on straight.

Nearly all the children jump up at the opportunity, enthusiastically waving their hands in the air and cheering for them to be chosen. Their innocent eagerness actually does lure a genuine smile out of the Head Professor. Is he really going to fight a child? The thought stings, thinking of Eris Halla. Too soon.

almost immediately, little hands shoot up into the air, waving as they excitedly bob up and down in hopes of being picked for this little exhibition match.[break][break]

well, not much of a match, really, but more so a challenge.[break][break]

"alright! you there, in the back. blue hair."[break][break]

blue like KING WAYLAND's.[break][break]

matias takes a step forward, leaving the microphone behind because it's not like he isn't loud enough to address the entire hall. he bounds to the edge of the stage before hopping off to go and greet the kid.[break][break]

after a bit of interaction, their pokemons are called out. matias' snorlax and the kid's poochyena. is his name kyle lopez as well? that's strange.[break][break]

"alright, young kyle! the challenge for you today is to WAKE MY SNORLAX UP! it ain't easy, so go all out!"

Blue hair? A rare find. Eva holds back a grimace in reminder of fairly recent events. Still, she smiles, clapping lightly to welcome the boy up towards the front of the gymnasium for the challenge.

Eva frowns, it’s not an easy task to wake up a Snorlax. Just in case it’s needed, Eva nabs the mic off the stand as she makes her way towards the front of the stage. In a fairly less graceful manner as Matias, she squats down and hops off to join him.

Poochyena vs. Snorlax. Luckily, it’s a challenge. All eyes are on young Kyle as he shifts warily into a battle stance. With the confident motion of a future Champion, he instructed his Poochyena to charge forward with a BITE.

Unfortunately, the Bite only causes the Snorlax’s deep snorne to grow louder, vibrating the air through the arena. A few giggles ring out through the crowd.

as expected, snorlax continues sleeping, too deep in its slumber to even be bothered by the slightest inconvenience that is poochyena's BITE that's more of a NIBBLE.[break][break]

though some of them giggle, matias urges young kyle to continue.[break][break]

"try and come up with a creative solution, little one. my suggestion is to try to overwhelm its senses."[break][break]

oh! the idea comes quickly.[break][break]

young kyle instructs his poochyena to PEE all over the place as it spreads its ODOR SLEUTH.

It’s sweet watching him coach the child with gentle encouragement. It almost makes her forget about everything going on between them, however briefly. Eva does genuinely smile as she watches the interaction and the boy’s face light up with the new idea.

The smile quickly fades when she realized what that idea is.

The giggles intensify as she Poochyena starts urinating all over the place. The gymnasium is soon drenched in the pungent smell. Eva does her best to hold it together, coughing gently into her sleeve. The kids are laughing hysterically and the adults are . . . well . . . not as thrilled.

matias manages to hold his laughter for a moment before realizing there's no point. the kids are laughing and having fun so it should be fine for him to join, right? so he laughs. he laughs and laughs and laughs, showing a more innocent side to him not many have seen.[break][break]

as expected, snorlax rumbles from the pungent smell, gagging as it realizes some of the pee had gotten on it as well. it looks to matias, shaking its head in disapproval.[break][break]

"alright, alright! good job, young kyle! now, we have to be creative again to come up with a way to get rid of this smell. your parents and teachers would smack me otherwise."[break][break]

he smiles, turning to look at his better half.[break][break]

"maybe dr. eva can help us here? this move i'm thinking of HEALS pokemon but what some may not know is that it also smells really nice."
